Modern Box-House

Contemporary modern home, with an open plan design. Two boxes connected by a service bar. The public-house box holds living/dining/kitchen with family/guest rooms on the second floor. The private-house box holds an 800 sf accessory dwelling unit for family member. Complete with kitchenette and walk-out to the backyard garden space. The second floor houses the master suite with starlight deck overlooking the tree canopy and garden below. The connector bar holds the laundry & utilities, the elevator and a small reading/family room adjacent to the master suite.

The client wanted very little maintenance and hired a local engineer/builder to construct this prefab house out of a metal stud and high strength concrete SIP construction system. The floors and roof also consist of the same paneled system with stucco finish. The product has an R-value rating of 50+ and a UL tested 3-hour fire rating.

Some owner/contractor leeway was taken with the exterior design, that removed some wood slat/trellis elements that would have provided: texture, warmth and shading from the east/southeast sunlight.

Project was designed while working for a previous firm and I acted as the lead project designer/manager.
